East Atlanta Kids Club Ride the Silver Comet

Ride Leaders, Tony, Idella and Richard led a spirited group of kids from the East Atlanta Kids Club on an exhilarating and slightly wet ride on the Silver comet Trail earlier this month. The kids and adults really enjoy the attention, guidance and motivation from MACC, as commented by Jill Sneider, Executive Director, who also participated in the ride. The East Atlanta Kids Club is a nonprofit mentoring and enrichment program for children ages seven to seventeen who reside in East Atlanta. To learn more about the program, visit EAKC.org.

East Atlanta Kids Club Brownwood Bike Rally

Every year, the East Atlanta Kids Club (EAKC) hosts their annual Brownwood Bike Rally, where kids and grownups in the community gather to enjoy a fun-filled day of cycling events and activities. This year, MACC helped sponsor the Bike Rally by donating over $2,000 in proceeds from their One Love Century with plans to donate a number of bikes to the club in 2008. EAKC is a non-profit group of neighborhood volunteers who provide mentoring and enrichment programs for kids living in East Atlanta. For more information contact Jill Sneider or visit EastAtlantaKids.org.

Festival of Speed

It's always an exciting time during the Festival of Speed at the Velodrome in East Point, Georgia. Here, at the Velodrome, you can watch amateurs and professionals race and compete for all kinds of unusual prizes, but mostly for the fun and sheer enjoyment of track racing. Above, Greg Masterson presents a check to Pete Antovich from proceeds from the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club's annual One Love Century ride. Built in 1976, the East Point Velodrome is a nonprofit organization that promotes bicycling safety clinics, summer camps, fitness and cycling programs for Atlanta's young people. To get in on the action and learn more about track racing at the East Point Velodrome, contact Pete Antonvich or visit DickLaneVelodrome.com.

Rallying for Safer Cycling

Sponsored by the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association (MAMA), Georgia Bikes! and many supporting sponsors, this year's Georgia Rides to the Capitol event was a great success! Thousands of police-escorted cyclists rode into the City of Atlanta from various surrounding neighborhoods to congregate on the foot of the Capitol building in support of safe and better conditions for Georgia cyclists and pedestrians.

On Saturday, September 2, 2006, MACC hosted its inaugural One Love Century Ride. The Century ride with options of 16, 27, 43, and 61 miles turned out to be a huge success, with over $7,500 in proceeds going to local organizations that promote cycling for Atlanta's Inner City youth: The East Atlanta Kids Club, South of Ponce Bikes, the East Point Velodrome, and the Dream Team Kids. With the help from MACC members, sponsors, family, and friends, MACC continues to support its mission of promoting cycling in the African American community and building camaraderie throughout the cycling community in Atlanta. MACC wishes to thank all those who came out to ride and to support this wonderful event through their kind donations, time, and efforts, without whose assistance, this successful Century ride would not have been possible.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Ride

This year's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day ride was enjoyed by a group of spirited cyclists who decided to brave the cold weather to enjoy a casual ride to the King Center in honor of Dr. King. This year, sadly, marks the passing of Dr. King's beloved wife, Coretta Scott King, who will be remembered for her tireless and courageous efforts to keep Dr. King's dreams alive and the King Center thriving and active in the Atlanta community. Mrs. King's celebration service was held on January 30, 2006 at Newbirth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia. She will forever be remembered.

East Atlanta Kids Club Bike Rally

MACC enjoys lending a helping hand through local community events such as the East Atlanta Kids Club Bike Rally held in May and the Bike Atlanta held in September 2004.

The East Atlanta Kids Club was founded in 1998 by neighborhood volunteers and consists of about 100 children and 150 adult volunteers who participate on a year-round basis in various recreational, artistic and cultural activities throughout the community.  Visit East Atlanta Kids Club at www.eastatlantakids.org.

Seagull Century 2004

A great time was had by all at this year's 2004 Seagull Century.  This is a "must" ride for all cycling enthusiasts of all levels.  For those not familiar with this relatively "flat" Century ride, the ride starts and finishes on the campus of Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland with Metric (63 miles) and Assateague (100 mile) options.

Close to 6,000 riders attended this year's event which attracts riders from all over the country including a very large turnout of the many talented African-American cyclists from
various clubs throughout the nation.

In keeping with tradition, the MACC group represented well in stepping up to the challenges of their fellow rivalry Major Taylor affiliates.

The MACC folks stayed at the Rodeway Inn on the beach where we were greeted in the mornings with picturesque sunrise views of the beach.

MACC remembers fellow cyclist, Diona Cobbs and her contributions over the years in making the gatherings at the Rodeway Inn a success. We continue to ride in her spirit.
